Powers: The creation and manipulation of cold fire. Theo's mutation allows him access to a special variety of fire that burns cold rather than hot. For the most part, it acts just like regular fire--ignites flammable things, spreads like crazy if allowed, fairly destructive, et cetera. The difference lies in the fact that it emits coldness rather than heat and has slightly different effects on the things it burns. Depending on the intensity of the blaze, his powers can do anything from leaving a light frost to incinerating an entire object into a pile of icy ash. It has its vagaries and limits, however. His abilities cycle naturally with the seasons, reaching their highest levels of power during summer and winter but surrendering to greater control during the more temperate seasons of fall and spring. As his powers developed, he's become even more dependent on this cycle. Winters are used to recharge for the rest of the year, and allow him to feel comfortable if a bit overpowered. Summers, however, leave him drained, cranky, and even ill if he's spending it in too warm of a climate. Part of the reason why he took the mission in Barrow was to escape these cycles until he can deal with them properly. That's part of why he wants to return to Xavier's in the first place: he needs to get a grip on this cycling or else be forced to go north every summer.
Currently, Theo has decent controls for his powers. He can turn the flames on at will via an emotional trigger. (Training this was rather interesting--essentially trial and error until he got it right, which took quiiiite a while.) Turning them off....well, that's a bit more difficult. Though he's practiced considerably since his first days as a mutant, he still often resorts to exhausting himself in order to cause the flames to shut down. Theoretically, there's an emotional trigger for the fire that's just as easy as the trigger to turn it on...but he hasn't found it yet. Oops. As always, Theo's abilities favor sheer power over control. If you want to summon a wall of fire or a blazing blizzard, then he's your man. If you just want one candle lit...well, good luck. He still struggles with controlling the fire itself; he'd much rather just throw it around blindly than manage any kind of finesse. Additionally, it still reacts automatically to mental or physical stress. He's tried to control that as well, but he hasn't had much luck so far.
When he dreams, he appears to burn with the usual cold flames of an outburst; however, there is no real temperature change (save a slight chill in the room). No danger of burning down the school in his sleep, although it might terrify a suitemate the first couple times. Another random tidbit about his power is that it freezes out his contacts immediately. While he should do the smart thing and switch to glasses…Theo feels doing so would make him look too "geeky" and thus prefers to deal with icicle-y contacts whenever possible. When he stepped up to become an X-man, fortunately, he acquired a pair of cold-resistant goggles that allow him to see clearly and avoid getting his eyes frozen. Still a bit weird-looking, for him, but better than glasses, right? Finally, as a side effect of his power, Theo is very fond of winter and snow and various cold things. He's very comfortable in the cold and mostly immune to hypothermia and the like. He could walk out in sub-zero weather in shorts and a T-shirt and still be quite comfortable. On the other hand, warm weather is absolutely crippling to him. Too much exposure quickly makes him cranky, crappy, and rather sick.
Personality: (under construction)
General Description
Theo was (and still isn't) the easiest person to get along with. Before his days at the Mansion, he was a prejudiced jerk who had little tolerance for anyone who seemed remotely different from him. Especially mutants. Fortunately, however, his training as a student softened him considerably, eventually breaking through many of his prejudices and allowing him to mature into a more tolerant (though still not completely accepting) adult. Otherwise, he remains very similar to his original personality--brash, often abrupt, and most certainly not a tactful person. There is some degree of kindness behind it these days, though, and while that bravado of his remains strong as ever, the softer insides are much easier to get at now. Additionally, he's fostered a strong protective instinct that extends to the students and staff at Xavier's. Becoming a home guard for the X-men is a duty that suits him well.
Strengths
Protective, proactive, stubborn, enduring, good at contact sports, hard worker, physically fit, honest, aggressive, confident, honorable, playful, football. Has a good offensive mutant ability, though his control still suffers.
Weaknesses
Too aggressive, stubborn, vengeful, prideful, pushy, tends to walk all over people if not told to stop, a bit chauvinistic, bullyinh, still somewhat prejudiced in general, undiplomatic, nearsighted (mentally and physically), over-protective, mildly paranoid. His abilities still need work when it comes to control.
History:
Theodore Wilson was born to Michael and Pamela Wilson in the city of Saginaw, Michigan. As the youngest child (and first son) of the family, Theo was immediately doted upon by his father, who took great pride in imparting to Theo all the Manly Wisdom he could muster. Baseball, golf, fishing--the boy accompanied his father on anything and everything possible. The two were (and still are) very close. Sure, he still loved his mother and sisters, but it was his father that really garnered Theo’s respect and adoration.
For the most part, Theo had a very normal, healthy childhood. Always a rather tall and aggressive boy, he found that it was easy to get what he wanted by intimidating the other children. He never went quite as far as to actually hurt anyone, but he did claim quite a few lunches before the teachers caught on to his bullying antics. After a few rounds of detentions from his teachers and groundings from his parents, he grew out of it…only to channel his aggressive instincts into something else. Football.
Football was Theo’s life. Starting with his first practice in sixth grade, he was practically obsessed with the sport. He wasn’t a very good player at first, but his unrelenting aggressive nature and his obsession with the game made him work harder at it than anything else. His grades suffered, but his father was thrilled by his son’s dedication. And so he continued to play--seventh grade team, eighth grade team, highschool. While not the best player in the history of Saginaw High, he made varsity his freshman year and never looked back.
Highschool was probably one of the best experiences of Theo’s life. As a football player, he was immediately granted some degree of popularity; he built upon this until he was easily at the higher echelons of high school society. He ate where he wanted, he dated who he wanted, he laughed at the freaks and geeks who populated the school--life was good. Like most kids in his school, Theo had no problems picking on the muties in the school and surrounding area, especially after an incident halfway through his sophomore year. One mutant girl with particularly dangerous powers attempted a rampage at school with some of her friends. They were caught before anyone was hurt, fortunately, but the scare and the backlash of anti-mutant sentiment in Saginaw was enough to force the expulsion of all registered mutants in the facility.
Fast forward to the summer before his senior year. Theo was football captain by then, gearing up for his last year before a possible continued football career at Notre Dame. A few weeks in, the team decided to have an informal game after practice that day. It went well, for the most part, until a spectacularly unlucky tackle sent Theo sprawling to the ground with a fractured shin. Although only a minor injury, it was enough to trigger a cyrokinetic outburst and awaken his mutant abilities. Theo was horrified to see that he was burning--burning!--and that the teammate who had stooped to help him was burning as well. Only mild hypothermia and cold burns, he would find out later, but the fact that he had used his powers (intentionally or not) to hurt a regular caused more than enough damage. Saginaw High School basically gave the Wilson family an ultimatum: remove the mutant quietly or we’ll call the press and expel him anyway.
What else could they do? Theo left Saginaw High quietly and, for one uneasy month, had no idea what his future was going to be like. No high school, no college, and, most importantly, no football. Even a regular tackle could trigger another fiery outburst. As it was, his family was initially relieved when Professor Xavier approached them about Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. He packed, he said his reluctant goodbyes, and left to take a plane to New York. On the way there, however, he had an interesting experience--he met Nick Melchiorre, a young man who claimed to be attending a private school in New York as well. During the long ride and various transfers, they were able to talk and generally get along. . .with neither of them realizing that the other was a mutant, and that they would soon be attending the same school.
Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters was both the best and worst thing to ever happen to him. After seventeen years of hating mutant guts, he had a very hard time adjusting to the fact that he suddenly was one. Hypocrite much? You bet. Denial issues? Numerous and persistent. For the entire summer and much of the fall semester, he made little progress with either his abilities or his prejudices. Only after a breakthrouggh with Summers did he finally seem to acknowledge that yes, he had problems, and yes, he was here to deal with them. His journey was hardly over, but once that breakthrough had been accomplished, he began actually wanting to work through his mutant abilities.
By the end of the year, it became clear that Xavier's was his new home. His developing abilites sparked conflict with his family, making it more and more difficult to maintain his roots in Saginaw. Even now, he only keeps in contact with his father and his sister; the rest of his family wants nothing to do with him. Considering that his options were rather limited, he asked Scott if he could stay on and train as one of the X-men. Scott agreed, fortunately, and thus Theo became a more-or-less permanent resident of the Mansion. Lately, he's been out on a mission in Alaska, but with that completed he's returned for the next semester. He'll likely teach extracurriculars or be otherwise available to the students.
Additional information: Theo has a deep, dark, if-you-tell-anyone-I-swear-I’ll-kill-you secret: he has a soft spot for fuzzy animals. Kittens, puppies, raccoons--so long as it’s cute and fuzzy, he lurves it. Naturally, such a disgraceful and un-macho lurve can’t be public knowledge, but…it’s one he has all the same. He also has a small teddy bear from home courtesy of his older sister (who still refers to him by the affectionate nickname of Teddy). Also, on a more random note, Theo is allergic to chili pepper. Small doses tend to swell up his throat a bit and upset his stomach; large doses would probably trigger his mutation. He really hates spicy food.
